Introduction to Video Production - Homework & Class Work

Homework

September 6, 2016 - None

Class Work

We are investigating the parts of a video.

SAMS

S – Story (the action you watch on screen… the actors and what they are doing, as well as location and time of day)

A – Audience (for whom are the youth artists making the video)

M – Message (why was the video made, what lesson should be learned, or what should the audience remember after watching the video)

S – Style/Creative Techniques (artistic ways to share the message and tell the story)

STORY EXAMPLE:   "Cafeteria - Wait Patiently when in Line

To better understand Story, here is a summary of the action that you see happening on-screen in this Cafeteria BEV (Behavior Expectation video).

    • Many students are waiting patiently in line for the cafeteria doors to open.
    • Mrs. Luz walks up to the end of the lunch line.

    • She decides that the line is “too long,” and so she cuts to the front of the line.  She is proud of herself.

    • A boy who was first in line can’t understand why she has done this. His hands are up, and he shrugs his shoulders.

    • The boy is polite and asks Mrs. Luz to go to the back of the line.

    • Mrs. Luz reflects on her actions for a moment and then agrees to go to the back of the line.

    • Mrs. Luz walks to the back of the line.

Class Information:  Introduction to Video Production  ~ An IB Art Course

In this class, students will be introduced to the IB Design Cycle.
During the Spring semester, students will work collaboratively to make two behavior expectation videos for Burnett.  Groups will be comprised of 2-3 students ... no more.
In the Fall semester and before they make the school videos, we will INVESTIGATE what makes a good video (such as personal preferences, good filming techniques, good acting, good lighting, good sound, and the good editing).  We will study the four parts of a video...SAMS (see below), and we will match many, many videos so as the understand each part of the video.

We will practice using the video equipment... video cameras, tripods, microphones, and other accessories.
We will practice filming each other from various camera angles.
We will import the footage from the camera into the Apple iMac desktop computers.
We will edit the imported raw footage and create a practice video with iMovie.  This will be done with a lot of guidance.

We will export and share the practice video with me.

We will practice storyboarding a video.

Behavior Expectation Videos  Students and their teammates will create two videos of school behavior expectations. (See the Burnett Middle School "ROAR Behavior Expectations" chart on page 13 of the Student Planner.
  • The first video one will be during the Spring semester with one team of students.
  • The second video will be made the Spring semester with a different team of students.

The video must share a message, which is a Burnett behavior expectation.  Mrs. Hunt will assign one to your team.

The audience for your video is your peers or fellow Burnett Middle School students.

Teams have to come up with the two S's in SAMS.
  • S = Story (who, what, where & when)
  • A = Audience (given to team, who)
  • M = Message (given to team, why)
  • S = Style or Creative Techniques (Your team will decide how you will create the video.)  Here is a short list of various styles or creative techniques.
    • color
    • black & white
    • text on screen
    • transitions
    • music
    • acting
    • interviews
    • students filmed, but not acting
    • English and Spanish
    • Subtitles

Create with Purpose Videos

Click this link to find "Create with Purpose" videos that former Burnett students of Mrs. Hunt's and Ms. Hochman's Video Production courses have created.

Our students came up with the ideas for the videos, and then they planned by writing a story and drawing a storyboard.  Next, they filmed the video and edited the footage.  They showed their video to the class, got feedback, and went back to edit--making sure it look great, professional, and polished.  They then exported the video and showed it at the end-of-year school or class Video Premiere.
